In today’s evolving coffee industry, staying updated with modern quality assessment tools is not just valuable—it’s essential. The Coffee Value Assessment (CVA) System represents a significant shift in how we evaluate and communicate coffee quality. Developed by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), the CVA System provides a holistic and transparent framework that bridges the gap between sensory evaluation and market value.

Unlike traditional cupping, the CVA System doesn’t just focus on flavor and aroma. It also takes into account the context in which coffee is produced, traded, and consumed. This includes attributes like uniqueness, clarity, balance, and even user experience. By learning this system, professionals can evaluate coffee more consistently and communicate its value more effectively throughout the supply chain—from producers to importers, roasters, and baristas.

For baristas and roasters, the CVA System is a powerful tool to align purchasing and quality control decisions with the expectations of consumers and partners. For producers, it offers clearer insight into how their coffee is perceived and valued beyond the farm. And for trainers and educators, it standardizes how we talk about quality, creating a shared language for learning and growth.

As an AST and CVA Trainer, I’ve seen firsthand how this system empowers coffee professionals to elevate their craft. It encourages objectivity, promotes fairness, and supports continuous learning. More importantly, it nurtures a more inclusive and transparent coffee industry where every stakeholder understands what value truly means.
