The Future of Coffee: Why Sustainability Matters and How It Is Evolving
Maryam Tabatabaei is the UAE’s first SCA Coffee Sustainability Program trainer. Why sustainability matters, and the four SCA courses she teaches.

A first for the UAE. Maryam Tabatabaei is now the UAE’s first SCA Coffee Sustainability Program trainer, and the first trainer in the country to teach all four courses of the program.

When we think about coffee, we think about its aroma, its flavour and the people behind every cup.
But have you ever wondered what the future of coffee will look like?
Climate change, rising production costs, changing regulations and economic challenges are already affecting coffee communities and businesses around the world. That is why coffee sustainability matters.
Sustainability Is More Than the Environment
Sustainability is not only about reducing waste or protecting nature. It is also about people, livelihoods and economics.
Farmers need viable businesses. Workers need decent livelihoods. Coffee companies need to manage risks responsibly. And everyone in the coffee value chain has a role to play.
Four Areas of the SCA Coffee Sustainability Program

Sustainability Foundation is where the journey begins. It gives a strong introduction to environmental, social and economic sustainability across the coffee value chain, and it is the first step before the three specialist courses.
Climate & Coffee explores how climate change affects coffee and how the industry can respond through adaptation, mitigation, carbon management, water, biodiversity and climate-smart practices.
Coffee Economics looks at the financial side of coffee, including the C Market, differentials, production costs, profitability, financing and living income.
Compliance, Governance & Reporting helps coffee professionals understand sustainability risks, due diligence, governance, stakeholder engagement and responsible reporting.
